Even if you do the right thing and have your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular basis and vacuum them thoroughly in between there will come a time when they really should be replaced.
The average carpet has a useful lifespan of somewhere between 8 and 15 years. However, that does also depend not only on the carpet itself but also on its overall quality, the padding used with it and the foot traffic it has to deal with on a daily basis.
No carpet, however, has a timer of alarm that will go off when it’s time for it to be replaced (although it would be handy if it did) Instead there are certain tell-tale signs to keep an eye out for that should tip you off to the fact that a trip to your local Dayton, Ohio carpet store is called for:
Matting
Matting. That sounds rather yucky, like something a dog’s fur does rather than a carpet but yes, carpet can matt. How much and how long it takes to happen can depend very much upon the material itself. For example, polyester only carpeting can look – and feel – great, but if it is exposed to heavier foot traffic it is more likely to matt. And once it does all the cleaning in the world won’t fix the problem.
If you do find you need to replace carpet because it has matted when choosing the new stuff consider selecting a tougher option this time -nylon perhaps – that can better handle all those feet.
Staining
Every carpet ends up with a few stains every once in a while. And for some time professional carpet cleaning can take care of the problem. As a carpet ages however complete stain removal becomes harder and harder. Eventually, you are left adding rugs or moving furniture strategically to try and hide the increasing number of stains. At this point, that trip to the carpet store is really one that needs to be made.
Aging Carpet Padding
A carpet’s padding is rather like its pillow, it’s the layer that helps give it that springy, comfy feeling that makes it so comfortable to walk – or even sit – on. Carpet padding also serves as an insulator to both keep heat in and levels down. But it, like carpet does not last forever. Once you begin to notice wrinkles in your carpet or it seems to be rather uneven these days those are good signs that it – and probably the carpet in general – should be replaced.
Looks
Home decor trends come and go. So do carpet trends. What was exceptionally fashionable ten years ago may look hopelessly dated now. Your personal design tastes may change as well. The jewel-colored carpet that went so well with your old Victorian style living room set may look rather garish now that you have replaced your older furniture with something sleeker and newer. Or you may simply want a change and the difference new carpeting can make to the overall look and feel of any room can be huge.
