There are a lot of different things that can contribute to just how fast a carpet will get dirty as well as to just how dirty it might get. Even if you buy a carpet that is advertised as “stain resistant” that does not mean it is soil resistant.
There are some sensible precautions may people take in between professional carpet cleanings to help keep their carpets cleaner. Frequent vacuuming is a big part of this of course (even though it is an annoying chore) and so is putting mats at the entrance to the home. Insisting that people do not wear outdoor shoes in carpeted rooms can help cut down on the dirt as well.
All of these are great ideas but one of the biggest enemies of a clean carpet is dust. Carpets act like a sort of filter, pulling down dust from the air around them. This can be great for improving air quality a little but not so great for the state of the carpet as even the best and most expensive vacuum cleaner cannot remove every dust particle (especially since there are probably lots more ready to take their place.)
Taking steps to reduce the dust in your home won’t guarantee you a clean carpet – nothing can – but you can help keep them a little cleaner as well as improve the quality of the air you have to breathe in general. Here are a few simple tips:
Air Purifiers – One way to help reduce the amount of dust that your carpet absorbs is to use air purifiers in the rooms you use the most to help catch some of the dust before it reaches floor level.
Fan based ones work best, the ionic ones can emit ozone. An air purifier won’t completely solve a dust problem but it will help reduce the amount of dust in your carpet, helping it to stay cleaner.
Humidity Levels – If you can keep the humidity level in your home to about 50% then you can reduce the amount of static in your home. Static attracts dust and makes it harder to remove from your carpet with a vacuum cleaner.
Maintain Filters – If you have a room air-conditioner or a forced air heating or cooling system keeping the filters they use as clean as possible can help reduce the amount of dust in the air too. They do not have to be cleaned every day but checking them once a month or so and cleaning or replacing them as needed really is a great idea.
