If asked about ceramic tile patterns most people immediately think about the standard square tiles laid out in a simple, uniform grid. But ceramic tiling can be so much more than that! There are a wide variety of ceramic tile patterns and variations available to add a real sense of pizzazz to your home whether you are creating a kitchen backsplash or retiling an entire hallway. Here are just a few ideas:
Diagonals and Diamonds – Instead of the standard way of laying ceramic tile, where grout lines run in a vertical and horizontal grid, try running the lines at an interesting 45 degree angle instead.
Random – You could consider choosing a tile that is available in several different shapes and sizing and interspersing them for a more unusual effect. This will be a little trickier than a “normal” tiling project but with some professional direction it can produce a look that is truly spectacular.
Basketweave – Choose rectangular ceramic tiles whose length is two or three times that of its width. Install two or three stacked horizontally adjacent to two or three vertically. This can be done either horizontally and vertically, or on a 45-degree diagonal and done properly produces an attractive and very unusual look anywhere in the home.
These are just a few ideas, an hour or so spent flipping through design magazines or interior decorating websites will provide you with many more. Ceramic tile is one of the most versatile materials you can work with for all kinds of projects and really the possibilities for their use are only limited by your imagination.
Of course, to ensure that your tiling looks the best it possibly can, professional tile installation really is a must. Although tiling can look very easy – in a YouTube DIY video for example – it really is not. It is messy, time consuming and rather tricky, especially if you want to make use of creative tile patterns like the ones we have described.
