There is a practice in the carpet cleaning industry that is little more than a scam and although it has been well documented in the past unfortunately people continue to get taken for a ride every day by carpet cleaning companies whose pricing policies are less than fair and in some cases downright deceptive.
The “bait and switch” as it is known in the industry can take many slightly different forms but here are a few of the common tactics you need to on the lookout for:
“Amazing” Coupons – Coupons can be a great way for a small business to market their services and gain more customers but some coupon deals can seem to be too good to be true and the unfortunate fact is that in the carpet cleaning business they are to good to be true because they are deceptive.
Often a coupon will offer the bearer a whole room carpet cleaning for a ridiculously low price. The problem is that in the small print you will often find that a “whole room” is defined as a space no bigger than the closets in your hallway. Or worse still that cleaning supplies are not actually included.
Have a normal sized room with carpets that are actually dirty? Then the service is going to end up costing you a lot more than the coupon promised in many cases.
Levels of Clean – Some companies will quote a very low price on the phone and then when they arrive they tell you that the price you were quoted applies only to their “basic” cleaning service.
For $xx extra you can upgrade to their “super clean” service to really get your carpets clean. Whatever the price is though this is a sign of a bad carpet cleaning company. A good one only has one aim for the services they provide; to leave every single carpet they service as clean as possible for one single affordable rate.
All the Extras – You call a carpet cleaning company and tell them you need three areas cleaned, your living room, dining room and your hallway. Great the company says ¨We have a special 3 rooms for just $39.95! Because that sounds like a wonderful rate you make the appointment.
When the company employees arrive is when all the “fun” really starts. Turns out that by room they meant a room that was 100 square feet. Your living room is 150 square feet so that will be extra. Also, because your hallway is L shaped that actually counts as two rooms so that will cost extra as well. And then about those coffee stains on the living room floor…..In the end the job ends up costing a great deal more than $39.95.
