When it comes to dirt and carpets what many people do not know is there are different types of soiling that can affect carpets. There is the dirt that is tracked in on people’s shoes and socks, dropped food, pet dander and then there is filtration soil.
Filtration soil is the term given to a type of soling that can build up slowly over time, even on well cared for carpets in terms of basic vacuuming. It comes from dust and dirt particles that are blown into the carpet in some way, often by forced air heating and cooling systems. It can also be caused by cracks in the subfloor that are allowing air from below to blow contaminants into the carpet from the underside or even by the breeze from an open window.
If filtration soil is allowed to build up it forms ugly gray lines and patches that a vacuuming alone just cannot shift, often leading people to think there is actually a defect in their carpet itself, especially if they have a lighter carpet that the soil is more visible on. It usually forms most noticeably around baseboards and door frames, annoyingly, in just the places it is harder for a standard vacuum to effectively reach.
The soil itself is made up of all kinds of things. Smoke (even the smoke from candles) air fresheners, the residue from furniture polishes and other spray cleaners and other airborne contaminants.
Often there is no really efficient way for homeowners to prevent at least a certain degree of filtration soiling from affecting their carpets. The subfloors can be checked for cracks and trying to reduce the number of air pollutants used in the home can help keep filtration soil levels down as well. However, the chances that a homeowner is willing to sacrifice their comfort by turning off the heat or the air just to get a cleaner carpet are not very high.
The only truly effective way to remove filtration soil from carpets is to have them professionally cleaned. There are spot treatments that can be used and some stain resistant carpeting can have fewer problems with filtration dirt but the only thing that can really remove all the contaminants from a carpet is a good professional carpet cleaning performed at least once every 12 months.
