A new year is on its way, and you have already decided that one of your resolutions for 2018 will be to make your home a better place to live this year. A part of this will be that you have finally decided it’s time for some new carpet. This is no small investment, whether you will be recarpeting one room or a whole house, so you do need to give such a big purchase some serious thought in order to get it right.
Before You Head Out to Shop
Even before you head out to hit the stores looking for the best in Dayton, Ohio carpets, there are certain questions and considerations you need to address that will help you make better buying choices when you do.
How’s the Traffic?
Every room in your home tends to see a different type of foot traffic. A formal dining room in the average busy home tends to see far less ‘action’ than the oft used family room and so different types of carpeting will be best suited to each. Something more durable for the living room and a higher end plush carpet for the dining room perhaps.
Household Makeup
If you have pets and/or kids you may want to look into carpet options that offer a little more stain resistance. For example, many of the great Ohio carpet choices available at C&L Flooring come with Stainguard protection built in and yet are still some of the best looking options around.
How Much Carpet Do You Really Need?
Merely calculating the square footage of the room is not really going to determine just how much carpet you need, unless you have a perfectly square room and a very, very talented carpet installer.
Many rooms have corners and curves that will require some clever cutting (and a certain amount of carpet wastage. The average rule of thumb? Square footage plus an extra 10%. If you have questions about how to measure your rooms properly that you’d like answered by a professional first call Ohio’s leading flooring experts at C & L Flooring, they will be happy to help.
What is Wrong with Your Old Carpet?
Just why are you replacing your carpet in the first place? . If it is a matter of it looking grimy have you tried having it professionally cleaned? The results can – and often are – astonishing.
On the other hand if you hate the color, or the pattern, or are simply ready for a change take the time to figure out why, so that you don’t end up buying a new carpet that you’ll dislike just as much a few months from now.
Fiber Type
All carpets are not created equal and the type of fibers they are crafted from can make a big difference to both its expected useful lifespan and the amount of care and maintenance it will need.
Although there are other options out there, these are the five most common carpet fibers you are likely to be faced with a choice between when you finally make it to the flooring store:
Olefin: Usually the least expensive option of all olefin is great for use in rooms that receive a great deal of natural sunlight as it has the ability to repel UV rays.
Nylon: Nylon is currently the bestselling fiber in the US and is often considered to be one of the most durable. Not only is it the most popular fiber it is is also the strongest and most durable option and available at a relatively low cost.
Polyester: Modern polyester carpet offers superior fade resistance
Triexta: Made up of 39% corn sugars, which translates to extreme softness and a certain ‘green’ factor that many people appreciate.
Wool: The premier carpet fiber you can possibly buy, wool offers excellent durability and a soft, luxurious feel that no other carpet fiber can replicate. It’s expensive though, so understand you will need to protect it with proper care.
Once you have addressed all of these issues you are finally ready to get out there and shop! It may have taken an extra few hours but the time and effort will be well worth it the first time you walk into that wonderful, newly carpeted room.
