Laminate flooring in Dayton, Ohio and elsewhere around the world is a great alternative to other flooring materials including wood. Unlike wood, laminate flooring is termite-resistant. Plus, laminate flooring often comes in easy-lock boards and won’t require any adhesives or nails to set it in place, hence making it easy to install.
While you can hire professional installers to do the laying, you can actually do the job yourself especially if you want to save extra cash. Here are some tips you can follow when you decide to install laminate flooring on your own:
- Open the package at least two days before the scheduled installation.
This method allows the laminated boards to “adjust” to the room’s humidity and temperature. Likewise, doing so can help minimize expansion or shrinking during installation due to temperature adjustment.
- Make sure the installation area is completely clean, dry and equally leveled.
This is because any moisture can potentially damage laminate flooring and ruin the entire project. Using a Protimeter prong test scale, check the subfloor moisture content – it should be at 12% at most. Next, measure the room’s humidity level using a hygrometer – it should be between 45 to 65 percent relative humidity level.
- Apply moisture barrier and lay down the laminate flooring.
Apply plastic lining on the floor and secure it using a moisture-resistant adhesive tape. Make sure not to overlap as it can cause the floor to be uneven. If the plastic lining has no padding, apply separate foam padding over the plastic lining.
- Apply the laminate board, one at a time.
Once the plastic lining and padding are already in place, begin placing the laminate boards one by one. Start at the top left corner of the room, and then continue lining up the longest wall side of the room. Add a spacer between the board’s edge and the wall end.
- Move on to the next row, and so on and so forth…
Continue applying the laminate flooring until every row is finished. Make sure there are no wide gaps between each board and are stayed parallel to the wall. When necessary, trim boards that do not fit the remaining spaces using a sharp miter saw and a table saw. Make sure to put spacers on all the edges of the room and remove once the entire flooring procedure is finished. You can add baseboards or other finishing touches to enhance the overall look of the flooring.
